The organisation of the AUCEA Next Steps: Community Engaged Learning conference being held in Brisbane 9-11 July 2012 is well underway.

Being hosted by QUT at their Garden Point campus, this year’s conference will again include a number of interactive presentation formats including storytelling and roundtables. After the success of our inaugural Student Showcase at last years’ conference examples of student community engaged learning will feature at a dedicated poster session.

Over 100 conference proposals were received and they are currently being double-blind peer-reviewed by a team of AUCEA reviewers. In line with our commitment to build the capacity of the sector, three online reviewer training sessions were conducted in late February-early March and 22 people from as far away as New Zealand and the USA participated in this program. Our thanks go to AUCEA Director A/Prof Diana Whitton for conducting these sessions.

Lorraine McIlrath has been confirmed as a keynote speaker for the conference. Lorraine directs the Community Knowledge Initiative (CKI) at the National University of Ireland Galway and she is responsible for developing and supporting civic engagement activities across the university through a range of programs. She has also worked on many international projects including the development of Local and Global Citizenship in Northern Ireland and the College of Multicultural Education in Sochi, Russia.

Carolyn Thompson is the Director – Education, Research and Training at the Australian Emergency Management Institute (AEMI), a branch of the Australian Government Attorney General’s Department, and she will be our second keynote speaker. With broad experience in public and private sector education institutions, within Australia and internationally, Carolyn has built strong relationships in regional tourism and event management in Australia. Her current research interests include the relationship between professionalism and personality, and the impact on organisational resilience.

In addition to Lorraine and Carolyn we are delighted to announce that ABC Radio Conversation Hour presenter Richard Fidler will be speaking at our conference dinner that is being held on Tuesday 10 July 2012 at The Block at QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus.

Early-bird conference registrations are now open and information can be found http://auceaconference.org.au/2012-conference/

Congratulations to the University of Wollongong (UOW) for achieving the maximum five stars in its first ever international benchmarking by the same organisation which determines the annual World University Rankings.

The QS Intelligence Unit’s audit said UOW’s impressive performance across its six criteria of employability, teaching, infrastructure, internationalisation, innovation and engagement helped it achieve the top Five Star status. “This is an outstanding achievement and firmly establishes UOW as one of the leading universities on the global university scene,” Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings said.

Professor Wellings said this first international benchmarking confirmed the consistent five star findings of UOW’s standing on the domestic front by the annual Good Universities Guide which comes out in August each year. “One of the standout results was that of ‘engagement’ which achieved a perfect score of 50 out of 50 points”.

The QS star rating system is a new way of looking at the strengths of universities, which are rated one to five stars depending on their performance within the evaluation. According to QS a typical five star university is “generally world class in a broad range of areas, enjoys a high reputation and has cutting edge facilities and internationally renowned research and teaching faculty”.

Following the very successful first Service Learning Summit in 2011, Griffith University, together with AUCEA, ACEN and Volunteering QLD are pleased to announce that registrations are now open for the Second Service Learning Summit to be held just a 10 minute taxi ride from Brisbane Airport at Moda Events, Portside Wharf, on Friday May 18, 2012.

The focus of this summit will be on the true nature of reciprocal relationships between higher education and the community, and a key feature of the day will be an overview of what is happening in service learning and community engagement across the Australian higher education sector. If sufficient participants from the school sector attend, specific roundtable discussions will be held regarding the growth of service learning in the school sector.

The main program runs from 10.00am through 4.00pm to facilitate participants flying in and out easily on the same day. However, for those who wish to fly in the evening before a special breakfast workshop is also offered.

Griffith University will launch its Service Learning project on Thursday evening, May 17 and participants of the Summit will receive a complementary invitation to this event.
